Who gets the call in week 1?

Pittsburgh Steelers: Mitch Trubesky vs Kenny Pickett

All indications from the Steelers training camp are that Mitch Trubisky is the preferred choice to start as a quarterback. As of now, Trubisky has only worked with the attacking first team, while the QBs’ Kenny Beckett and Mason Rudolph have split with Pittsburgh’s second and third offensive teams for most of the week.

Rudolph split the first-team reps with Trubisky later in the week and, by some accounts, actually beat out the preferred option. Rudolph was the more consistent of the two, while Mitch nearly tossed three interceptions.

A direct comparison with Beckett was difficult, because he works almost exclusively with the third team. still. Beckett seemed cohesive and consistent.

So why wasn’t Rudolph listed as a potential Week 1 starter on most NFL odds boards? Speculation is that it could act as a measuring stick for Trubisky and allow for a consistent calculation when splitting reps with Pickett.

NFL prospects currently favor Trubisky for the QB1 title, but Pickett is on hand. Don’t be surprised to see these strange changes suddenly when Kenny is called up to work with the first team, which could make a strong case for the position.

  • Mitchell Trubesky -250
  • Kenny Beckett +170

Seattle Seahawks: Jenno Smith vs. Drew Locke

According to the odds makers, the departure of Russell Wilson from Seattle created the league’s most contested quarterback fight, with Genu Smith and Drew Luke vying for starting position.

Jenno Smith is currently preferred to take over, with the 31-year-old getting the majority of the cast in camp. Smith joined the team in 2019, giving him an advantage over Locke, who found his way to Seattle via the Wilson trade.

The team has remained conservative regarding their preferred choice at this point in time, as the Seahawks seem to be keeping all things home. Offensive coordinator Shane Waldron only answered “Denver” when asked about any possible deadlines for naming a starter, referring to their first week fight against the Broncos.

Waldron notes that Luke has done a good job of acclimatising to the new offense, and while the team appears to be giving Luke a fair chance to earn the position, Smith appears to have a slight nod to the new man in town.

The scheduling gods were kind enough to impress Russell Wilson with his former team in week one, giving fans an instant chance to compare Seattle’s new QB to “Mr. Unlimited.”

Atlanta Falcons: Marcus Mariota vs. Desmond Ryder

After failing to lure at Deshaun Watson, the Falcons brought in former Titan player Marcus Mariota to take over. Mariota has long been favored to secure the QB1 roster slot, a position left vacant after the team traded Matt Ryan for the Colts over the holiday season.

Prior to being appointed head coach of the Falcons in 2021, Arthur Smith worked as the Titans’ offensive coordinator. His knowledge of Mariota’s skill set only supports the argument that Marcus will be the signal caller in week one.

However, the odds-makers haven’t completely written off rookie Desmond Ryder, with Cincinnati’s third-round currently picking at +550 to start week one.

Mariota gained valuable NFL experience in his time with the Titans, but his move to the Raiders saw him as Derek Carr’s reserve for two seasons. Entering this season, it’s been more than two years since Mariota started their last NFL game.

The Falcons are clearly planning to develop Ridder into the franchise quarterback, and the team has already expressed that both options will see plenty of shots in pre-season.

Given that next year’s draft class has the potential to showcase a promising QB class, the Hawks will want to test Ridder early to see if they should work on their long-term plans on whether the team will need to cut the bait.

If Mariota shows signs of rusting or if his durability concerns seem to carry weight, choosing to play the Ridder will be in the team’s best interest in the short and long term.
