Jeep chases Range Rover, Mercedes-Benz and Lexus with a new range of luxury Wagoneer models in Australia – Car News

Jeep is committed to the future of driving on the right and has big plans for the Australian market. And they’re no bigger than going after the top names in the luxury car sector – but that’s the plan for the American brand.

Christian Meunier, CEO of the Jeep brand, has confirmed that the Wagoneer panel will be introduced in Australia, starting with the recently revealed all-electric model, currently known as the Wagoneer S.

This all-electric SUV is positioned as an excellent battery-powered alternative to the Range Rover Sport, expanding the range of models with the nameplate, which currently includes the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer in the US market.

In fact, Mr. Meunier believes the new Wagoneer S has the potential to replace the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk, which is powered by a 6.2-liter supercharged V8.

“The Wagoneer S is in the Trackhawk area,” he said. “That’s the kind of performance you’ll get. With electricity, there’s a lot you can do with an EV, and there’s almost no limit.”

Although no official specifications have been confirmed, Jeep said in its Wagoneer S reveal that it is targeting a 447 kW dual-motor powertrain that will allow for a 0-60 mph (0-96 km/h) time of just 3.5 seconds. . It will do so with a range of up to 600 km, assuming Jeep engineers can meet expectations.

In the United States, the Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer have been on sale since 2021 as full-size SUVs over the Grand Cherokee. The return of the Wagoneer name was first announced by the late Sergio Marchionne in 2011, so it took nearly a decade for these luxury-focused SUVs to arrive.

There are currently four options on the American market – the more premium Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer, as well as long-wheelbase versions with more cabin space, known as the Wagoneer L and Grand Wagoneer L. These models are powered by a 6.4-liter V8 engine. Or the new six-cylinder petrol engine with twin turbo.

While Meunier has ruled out putting the petrol-powered Wagoneer and Grand Wagoneer models on sale in Australia anytime in the near future, the introduction of the new Wagoneer S would give the Jeep brand a chance to rise to market, if it can replicate its success in the USA.

The Wagoneer panel will be offered in Australia, starting with the all-electric model that was recently revealed.

“When you look at the success we’re having in the United States with the Grand Wagoneer, we’re attracting a lot of Range Rover buyers, [plus] Cadillac and Mercedes-Benz. “So cross-shopping is so much fun and we’re seeing people we’ve never seen in an agency.”

However, he made it clear that Wagoneer would not split up and make a standalone brand either in the US or Australia, and would instead remain under the Jeep umbrella.

“It will be an extension of Jeep, I said that Range Rover for Land Rover will be similar,” explained Mr. Meunier. “It also allows us to have a more fluid design, and we want Jeep to remain sturdy and boxy, with the traditional grille. With the Wagoneer it gets softer and more contemporary, very premium, perhaps with a lower track rating.”

But he clarified that these newer, more luxurious models won’t be soft, adding that a 4×4 will be standard on any Wagoneer model.

Mr Meunier has given no indication as to when the Wagoneer S will arrive in Australian showrooms. The SUV is expected to be in US dealers sometime in 2024, which likely means it won’t be in Australia until halfway through the decade.
