Under the plan launched by the department in 2019, about 50 areas were selected as candidates for national parks. The parks are expected to cover 10 percent of the country’s land area and protect more than 80 percent of the main national protected wild plant and animal species and their habitats.
In October, China announced its first group of five national parks, covering a total area of more than 230,000 square kilometers and containing nearly 30 percent of the country’s major wildlife species.
Since its establishment, the parks have made achievements in the field of environmental and species protection.

At the annual conference of the Boao Forum for Asia in Hainan Province in April, Li, an official of the National Forest and Grassland Administration, said that this year China will establish national parks on the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and in the basins of the Yellow River and Yangtze River. .
Li also said at a press conference on Monday that China’s planted forest area has reached 87.6 million hectares, ranking first in the world, and grassland area is 264 million hectares, ranking second in the world. He added that China is also one of the 12 countries with the richest biodiversity in the world.
