Knicks in the trade rumor between Russell Westbrook and Donovan Mitchell

Donovan Mitchell is still a member of the Jazz, as business talks in the NBA cooled off in August after a flurry of early off-season activity. While fans are likely disappointed with the lack of huge deals popping up lately, one big one seems to have been discussed.

The Lakers, Knicks and Jazz have held talks about a three-team deal that would have seen an upcoming party for Mitchell and an unofficial departure from Los Angeles to Russell Westbrook, according to Michael Scotto of Hoopshype.

In the proposed trade, the Lakers would have sent Westbrook to Utah, where he would be bought out of his contract. Next, the Jazz sent Mitchell to the Knicks, as well as a commercial package that included the following two players to Los Angeles: Patrick Beverly, Jordan Clarkson, Bojan Bogdanovich and Malik Paisley. In contrast, Jazz was in line to receive a large number of draft picks from both other teams involved in the deal.

Questions arose about who the Knicks would be willing to send to the Lakers if the deal materialized. Los Angeles had already expressed an interest in striker Cam Reddish, whom they tried to acquire last year in another three-team deal with the Knicks and Raptors, although that never came to fruition. New York was also likely looking to offload a veteran to make room for Mitchell’s salary, with Derek Rose number one on the list of potential departures.

However, the most obvious question surrounding the trade was how many draft picks Utah was in line to receive. The report maintains that the Jazz were looking to get more picks for Mitchell than they received in the previous offseason deal, which sent All-Star Center Rudy Gobert to the Minnesota Timberwolves. The comeback on that deal featured an astonishing four future first-round picks, as well as 2022 first-round pick Walker Kessler.

It is unknown whether the Knicks will have to concede more than four or five of their first-round picks to Mitchell, or whether the Lakers will also have to pitch until the Jazz agree to Westbrook’s massive contract.

Although we may never know, a deal has apparently been discussed between the three and the talks may intensify again as training camp approaches.
